Argon isotope dating

Strata Thickness- In the late 1800s, a British geologist estimated that 75 million years has lapsed since the beginning of the Cambrian.

This estimate was based upon the maximum known thickness of strata (from Cambrian to present) divided by the average rate of sedimentation in modern environments. Joly used the salinity of ocean water to determine the age of the earth.

The noble gases are sometimes called inert gases because Group 18 (VIIIA) elements react with very few other elements.

In fact, no compound of argon has ever been produced.

Esistono vari metodi di datazione radiometrica, differenti nella precisione della misura, nei costi e nelle scale temporali per le quali possono essere utilizzati.

Second, the calculations did not incorporate the heating effects of radioactive decay.

The number of protons within the atom's nucleus is called atomic number and is equal to the number of electrons in the neutral (non-ionized) atom.

Argon was discovered in 1894 by English chemist John William Strutt, most commonly known as Lord Rayleigh (1842-1919), and Scottish chemist William Ramsay (1852-1916).

It was the first of the noble gases to be isolated.
